Ashes-to-Go

Ashes-to-Go at Redeemer began in the Spring of 2021 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, Episcopal churches did not yet have approval of the diocese for in-person services. Father Bill Combs, rector at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, set up a drive-thru event in the parking lot of the old Fred’s building in downtown Greensboro so that church members and anyone in the community could drive up and collect a small container of consecrated ashes, an information sheet about Ash Wednesday, and instructions for placing the ashes on one’s forehead.

Because of the popularity of the event, Father Combs, has held Ashes-to-Go every Ash Wednesday since 2021. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a season of reflection, penitence, and renewal prior to Easter on the Christian calendar. Ashes come from burned remnants of previous year's Palm Sunday palms, as well as, burned leaves and twigs from the Redeemer Remembrance Garden.

Anyone wishing to participate can drive into the Fred’s parking lot and see Father Combs. “Many who come are not members of our church. I enjoy spending time with these folks and they find this ancient ritual, reframed in a very modern experience, very meaningful,” said Father Combs.

Parking Lot of the old Fred’s Department Store, North Main Street (across from the Greensboro City Hall).

The Jazz Legacy Project Series

What is it?

Each program is roughly 90 minutes, with the goal of bringing the casual jazz listener inside the minds and music of the most influential and interesting American musicians of all time.  The life and music of the artist/composer is entertainingly narrated by the drummer, Mr. Justin Varnes, and seminal jazz pieces are played to illuminate the narration.  These are NOT tribute concerts in the sense that the musicians are trying to recreate the original performances, but instead to celebrate the essence and accomplishments of the particular artist.

Who is it?

Leader Justin Varnes has taught jazz at Emory University, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State University, as well as toured with Earl Klugh, Phoebe Snow, and Mose Allison. His Jazz Legacy Project was sponsored by the Fulton County Public Library system for a year-long series of concerts.
